Veeam Release v12.1 Backup 6 Replication in der Veeam Data Platform Update 23H2

Here we outline the feature Backup Direct-to-object storage, as part of
Veeam Backup & Replication Release v12.1 (Veeam Data Platform Update 23H2)

Update 23H2: Backup Direct-to-Object Storage

With V12, Veeam has made a fundamental step in the previous backup architecture: Backup Direct-to-Object Storage. Veeam thus opens up new possibilities for expanding backup strategies with its cloud backup solution. Backup data can be saved directly to an object storage; a backup copy or archive is no longer necessary.

Object storage as the primary repository

According to Veeam, the advantages of using Veeam Object Storage as a primary repository at a glance:

  • Simple implementation of immutable storage.
  • High availability from the cloud provider.
  • Simple backup for branch offices or home office users without the need to purchase special hardware.
  • High flexibility of the VMware environment (no stage repository with expensive virtual hard disks is required).

Recovery options

A range of recovery options are available: from object storage migration up to point-in-time bucket status rollback for fast recovery from ransomware or malicious attacks. In addition,

  • entire storage accounts
  • only certain buckets
  • objects with certain tags or
  • individual objects with immutables

can be protected.

With Cloud Connect Backup, Veeam Backup for AWS, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure or Veeam Backup for Google Cloud backups can now be backed up to another cloud repository via a Veeam Copy Job.

For example, via the cost-effective Wasabi Cloud Storage solution, which can be directly and easily integrated as a repository since V12.

Conclusion

With the Object Storage function, Veeam offers new possibilities to fulfil security requirements and guidelines as well as the 3-2-1 rule. Cloud storage is used as a scalable virtual air gap. This means that data can be flexibly stored redundantly in remote data centres in encrypted form and used for recovery in the event of an emergency.
