Performance optimization

The simplest solution for large amounts of data.

We live in a rapidly growing data world. Each company experiences an estimated growth of up to 40 percent per year. This data poses major challenges to data protection systems, especially when it comes to unstructured data. Here, Media Files, IOT and Big Data are among the exponentially growing data sources. Unlike structured data in, for example, a relational database, there is little to no application-side capability to secure this data with intelligent APIs.

Our customers face the challenge of protecting individual file systems with multiple PBs or with billions of small objects on a daily basis. Both backing up large data objects and a large number of backup objects cause problems and lead to long backup times. A complete recovery (disaster recovery) can quickly take days.

Often, such data is only protected by storage snapshots. However, this does not represent a backup of the data in the classic sense, since the blocks are usually mirrored and do not leave the storage subsystems at all (media disruption). A further disadvantage of this method is that you are tied to a storage manufacturer (vendor lock-in) and have to use expensive storage technologies. This also makes it difficult to switch to other technologies, since the "backup data" is usually only available in proprietary formats and must either be abandoned or restored at great expense when the storage subsystem is changed.

With the right technology and the concepts that fit your requirements, you can avoid such situations. A holistic view is crucial for this.

We consider not only your backup environment, but also the adjacent landscape of storage, network, database and other systems in order to implement and use performance optimizing measures and solutions.

Your benefits, depending on the solution:

  • Optimization and improvement of runtimes for backup and restore operations
  • Reduction of total costs (TCO, OPEX, CAPEX consideration)

Our services:

  • Consultation around the product as well as adjacent systems
  • Support during installation and configuration in the customer environment
  • Carrying out tests to determine the best possible configuration for you
  • Support during implementation and operation of the solution
  • English-speaking support

Growing file systems, dwindling backup windows - the challenges of backing up and restoring large amounts of data and files are growing.
However, the dsmISI MAGS module developed by General Storage solves this problem. In addition to the IBM Spectrum Protect Client, dsmISI MAGS expedites the process of identifying data when backing up and restoring that data.
In particular, companies with unstructured data (big data, file services) can drastically reduce the enormously long file system scan times before the actual incremental backup.

Functions of dsmISI MAGS

  • A powerful solution for backing up and restoring large file systems
  • Supports CIFS and NFS (and other Unix) file systems
  • Serves as wrappers to the IBM Spectrum Protect client
  • Offers "incremental forever" strategy

Our services

  • Competent consulting around MAGS
  • Execution of test setups to determine the best possible configuration for you
  • Support during implementation and operation of the solution

Your benefit

  • Reduction of the backup time of file systems
  • Very high degree of parallelization of backup streams possible
  • Reduction of recovery times of large file systems
  • Use of a native ISP backup/archive client
  • Ability to replace backup methods such as NDMP backups, SnapDiff backups of Netapp filers and journal-based backups, thus eliminating dependencies

dsmISI ISP simplifies the integration of IBM Storage Protect (ISP) and IBM Spectrum Protect+ (ISP+) with Dell EMC Isilon OneFS and significantly decreases backup and recovery times.

In principle, dsmISI ISP implements dynamic multipathing, which automatically spreads read and write operations symmetrically across all available network paths and Isilon nodes, guaranteeing maximum performance for any attached ISP server.
dsmISI is installed on the operating system – such as Linux, Unix or Windows – as a deamon/service and on communities with Isilon clusters, it creates NFS/SMB connections to all nodes and presents them to ISP servers as a single, very fast file system. dmsISI automatically detects whenever Isilon nodes fail or when nodes are removed from or added to a cluster.
Failovers are executed transparently for ISP. Dynamic load balancing at runtime ensures that all nodes of a cluster are being utilized equally. In ISP+ environments dsmISI ISP is set up on the vsnap server and dsmISI additionally stripes the vsnap pool data across the Isilon nodes.

Features of dsmISI ISP

  • Dynamic mulitpathing: always uses network paths with the lowest latency at runtime
  • Creates active NFS/SMB connections to all Isilon nodes automatically
  • Load balancing over all nodes of an Isilon cluster
  • Automatic detection of failure, removal and additions of nodes in Isilon clusters
  • Supports ISP on Linux, Unix, and Windows as well as any number of Isilon systems
  • Installed on the operating system as a deamon/service
  • Can be combined with other applications on the Isilon (i.e. dsmISI Veeam, dsmISI DB)
  • Supports Storage Protect Plus including vsnap pools

Your benefits

  • Optimization and improvement of runtimes for backup and restore operations.
  • Reduction of total costs (OPEX, CAPEX).
  • An experienced partner who supports you during implementation and operation.
