Veeam Backup & Replication v13 represents a major step forward for Veeam toward modern, web-based administration and fine-grained permissions. The new features are designed to simplify operations in distributed teams, increase security, and create more transparency in everyday backup tasks — from the web interface to the enhanced role model.

The importance of Web UI and RBAC today

Backup environments are becoming more complex: hybrid infrastructures, distributed locations, and stricter compliance requirements are now standard. At the same time, demands for speed and flexibility are growing, and administrative interfaces must not create additional hurdles. Veeam v13 addresses these issues with a new web UI and a significantly expanded RBAC framework, which are specifically designed to fit into modern operating and security concepts.

The new web UI: manage Veeam directly in your browser

The new web interface in v13 allows you to manage key backup functions directly in your browser. This includes creating and customizing typical backup jobs, monitoring job status and error messages, and a dashboard that shows the overall status of the environment at a glance. The goal is to be able to perform many everyday tasks without a locally installed Windows console, while still having it available for complete configuration.

The web UI is platform-independent and is based on common accessibility standards such as WCAG to reduce barriers for different user groups. By focusing on browser access and modern UI technologies, Veeam is laying the foundation for gradually adding more features to the interface in future versions.

Interaction between the web UI and conventional console

In Veeam Backup & Replication v13, Veeam considers the web UI to be an explicit addition to the established Windows console. The so-called “fat client” console remains available with its full range of functions and has also been visually modernized, for example with an updated design and dark mode. The new Web UI initially covers the most frequently used workloads and management tasks; feature parity with the console is deliberately not planned immediately, but in several stages.

This means that organizations can decide which tasks to migrate to the browser early on—such as monitoring, standard backups, or simple restores—and which tasks to keep in the console for the time being. This allows the introduction of the web UI to be controlled without abruptly changing existing processes.

Identity & Access: SSO meets RBAC

Parallel to the web UI, Veeam v13 strengthens the identity and authorization model. The platform supports single sign-on via SAML-enabled identity providers such as Microsoft EntraID, integrating directly into existing IAM landscapes. The goal is to centralize logins, avoid password silos, and enable consistent use of security features such as multi-factor authentication and conditional access.

Based on this, v13 introduces an enhanced RBAC framework that allows for significantly finer role and permission schemes than previous versions. The new capabilities are specifically designed for environments with tenants, departmental roles, or strict compliance requirements where conventional “all-round” roles are no longer sufficient.

Conclusion: RBAC reinvented – granular roles for everyday use

While RBAC in the Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR) server was previously based primarily on predefined roles with limited granularity, v13 introduces an expanded system based on the functionality of Enterprise Manager. Administrators can now set granular permissions for individual users or groups that are limited to specific workloads, repositories, or task areas. For example, roles can be defined that only have view and change rights for selected VMs, tenants, or backup jobs.

The new RBAC framework is designed to implement the least privilege principle more consistently in practice without increasing the administrative overhead. Veeam emphasizes that the new role model already covers a large proportion of typical workloads in the first v13 release, with further areas to follow in future releases.
