Veeam V13 Backup & Replication: Early Release

Veeam has released the long-awaited version 13, but currently only for new installations on Linux. Version 13 for Windows-based installations, including the migration option, is expected to be available in Q4 2025.

We would like to highlight what we consider to be the best features of V13 in more detail here.

Veeam Software Appliance / Veeam Infrastructure Appliance

V13 on Linux is available as an OVA (Open Virtual Appliance) and as an ISO, and offers a pre-hardened and pre-built Rocky Linux system with JeOS (Just Enough OS) out of the box, which omits all unused components of an operating system.  No Linux expertise is required for the installation itself.

This can also be used for Veeam proxies and Veeam repository servers. Complete OS hardening is already performed during installation. Future OS patches are rolled out directly via Veeam and the components, which also significantly simplifies OS management.

For the first time, this also enables Veeam to be operated completely without Windows components, as former ‘Windows-only’ components are now also supported under Linux, such as Mount Server, Gateway Server and Guest Interaction Proxies.

Web UI

Version 13 also sees the rollout of the first draft of the new Web UI for Veeam. This allows you to configure parts of the system and check the status of a Veeam server at a glance.

V13 will also feature a new Veeam Remote Console, where, as usual, all Veeam components can be configured – all in a new, modern design.

High Availability

Probably the most requested feature by many customers: in version 13, Veeam now offers the option of using HA (High Availability) functions for Linux-based VBR (Veeam Backup & Replication) installations.

This is based on continuous replication of the PostgreSQL database between two VBR systems. This means that even if one data centre fails, access to the Veeam interface should still be possible.

Enhanced Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)

Version 13 significantly expands the RBAC system of the VBR server. As with Veeam Enterprise Manager, Veeam now offers the option of setting granular permissions for individual users. Previously, RBAC in the VBR server was limited to individual roles that could not be set granularly.
