Data Protection

Data Protection is a term used in IT in two contexts: 1) data protection and 2) data backup. In the context of data backup, we speak of data protection when it comes to backing up and restoring a company's or organization's data from internal and external threats such as data loss, compromise, or corruption. This can occur as a result of cyberattacks such as malware or, more specifically, ransomware with extortion attempts. A significant proportion of attacks are also caused by internal (unintentional or even intentional) misconduct on the part of employees.

Data protection therefore includes the backup itself or the various types of backups, as well as measures for data archiving, data storage, data management, data mirroring, or data recovery or disaster recovery (DR). Zero Trust measures – especially with regard to access authorizations – are also part of data protection. Insofar as disaster recovery is a process that is assigned to Business Continuity Management (BCM), backup also represents a sub-area of ​​BCM.
