Why back up cloud data?
Cloud-native security and backup features (AWS Backup, Azure Backup, snapshot mechanisms, IAM policies, etc.) are not designed for forensically verifiable or testable cyber recovery. While they offer basic security and important fundamental protection regarding availability, this is insufficient to comply with regulations such as NIS2, DORA, BCM, or ISO 27001.
Furthermore, the shared responsibility model prevails in the hyperscaler and cloud environment. This means that backing up and restoring cloud data is the responsibility of the customers, whose cloud workloads are often business-critical. As reports show, cloud data in the hyperscaler environment is now a preferred target for cyberattacks, whether via IAM data or the compromise of APIs and backup repositories.
Protecting cloud workloads therefore requires a new approach that takes these methods into account. Since cloud services and well-known hyperscalers themselves do not have a recovery concept of the necessary maturity, how can cloud backup data be better protected?
